SPECTRUM Groups

SPECTRUM has a number of support groups and social programs to help LGBTQ2+ people form friendships and connections within the community in order to reduce the isolation that LGBTQ2+ people experience and expand their network of support.

During COVID, our groups are continuing to meet virtually.

SPECTRUM Support Groups

PFLAG

SPECTRUM provides administrative support for the local PFLAG Chapter’s Parents, Family & Friends Support Group, which focuses on topics of interest to parents, family and friends of LGBTQ individuals. This group generally meets on the third Tuesday of the month from 7-9 PM.

Transgender Support Groups

SPECTRUM offers a number of peer support groups for transgender and gender variant people, including but not limited to: transgender, non-binary, agender, Two Spirit, and beyond.

Rainbow Multicultural Connect

A group where people from diverse cultures gather together at SPECTRUM to discuss what it is like to be LGBTQ+ across the world. We meet on the afternoon of the second Sunday of the month from 3 PM to 5 PM.

Youth (18-25) Peer Support Group

Thanks to a grant from the Bell Let's Talk Community Fund, SPECTRUM offers a weekly group for youth aged 18-25. This is an opportunity for young people to connect for discussions, networking, and fun with a goal of increasing participants' sense of belonging and mental wellness. The group will meet on Thursdays at 7pm.

General Social Groups

Converse & Connect

Whether you’re thinking about coming out, newly out, or out for ages, this group provides an opportunity to talk, share and connect with others in the LGBTQ community aged 19+ in a safe, positive and supportive environment.

A chance for KW (Cambridge too) queers to get together and play board games. We also solve jigsaw puzzles, play with dinky toys, like Yo-Yo’s, and build with LEGO, as we meet up with old friends and make new.

Saturday Drop-Ins

This social drop-in event is a great opportunity to meet other people, to talk about whatever you currently have on your mind, and to make new friends! Come and hang out with us in a casual, relaxing atmosphere where you can just be yourself! This event is ideal for you if you just want to socialize in an LGBTQ-friendly setting.

Targeted Social Groups

SPECTRUM Prime

We see things differently as we age. Priorities shift. Social circles change. Please join us for a social and discussion group for older LGBTQ-identified adults.

2SLGBTQ+ Book Club

In partnership with Waterloo Public Library, the 2SLGBTQ+ Book Club will give participants the opportunity to discuss books by 2SLGBTQ+ authors, or books that explore 2SLGBTQ+ experiences. Usually meets the last Monday of the Month, 7pm at the Waterloo Main Library.

2SLGBTQ+ Yoga

In partnership with The Branches Yoga, the free 2SLGBTQ+ Yoga Group will meet once per month (on the second or third Sunday depending upon holidays) at The Branches studio. No previous yoga experience is required and this is a space for EVERY body. This is an exclusive space for 2SLGBTQ+-identified people and trans and non-binary folks are especially encouraged to join us.

Mindful Movement Group

This free group will meet once per month explore movement and dance, and how we can connect with others and with ourselves in an open and meaningful way. Participants will use movement and dance to support being present and exploring new ways to move more freely, while also focusing on having fun and enjoying dance together. With facilitator, Joscelyn Guindon RDMT (qualifying) MSW RSW. 

This group is for EVERY body. No technique or dance experience needed. More information here!

Queer Craft Circle

In partnership with Button Factory Arts, we are pleased to offer Queer Craft Circle. This free group will meet monthly on Zoom to create crafts with local artists. Explore a variety of artistic mediums in this fun and casual group. We will meet on the last Friday of every month from 5:30-7:30pm.

All supplies are included and will be ready for pickup at Button Factory Arts (25 Regina St S, Waterloo, ON N2J 1R8) before meetups. Registration is limited to 10 participants per group and is limited to 2SLGBTQ+-identified people in Waterloo Region.

2SLGBTQ+ Young Adult Networking Group

This free group for 2SLGBTQ+ young adults aged 25-40 will meet once per month at a restaurant in Waterloo Region. Participants will receive $30 towards their meal and will have the opportunity to network and socialize with other young 2SLGBTQ+ adults. The restaurant will be announced in advance and you will need to register to attend. Space will be limited!

SPECTRUM offers a safe place where 2SLGBTQ+ individuals can be themselves and find community and supports.
